BOTH PLEASED AND ANNOYED
I read the first two volumes of NESFA Press' nine volume set of Roger Zelazny collected stories called appriopiately enough THE COLLECTED STORIES OF ROGER ZELAZNY. What pleases that the two volumes reprinted a considerable portion of his poetry including many previously unpublished work. This brings to mind my own Zelazny story..He was co-editing a tribute anthology for Jack Williamson. I queried him if the collection was open to poetry. For almost a year I hear nothing and truth be told I had forgotten about it. Then on a Friday night at 10 pm the telephone rings. My mother answers and tells its for me.
I take the telephone and it turns out to be Zelazny. I am speechless. He asks me if I could send one or two poems for the collection. I say sure, we have a pleasant conversation and I promise to send two poems as soon as I can. I write two haikus that night and put them in the mail. A week later I get another call, its him. He says he loved both poems and is $50 enough for them. I think he means $50 for both poems. Then I realise he means $50 a poem. Hey thats the best rate I ever been paid for poetry. I said yes and thats the end of my story.

I CANT STAND THE POETRY BUT LOVE THE ANALYSIS
MY VOCABULARY DID THIS TO ME THE COLLECTED POETRY OF JACK SPICER ed. by Peter Gizzi and Kevin Killian Middletown,CT; 2009,Wesleyan University 2008, hb,no price listed, ISBN 978-0-8195-6887-8 .
Even though this book is almost two years ago I am sure it is still readily available. Now I am no fan of the work of Jack Spicer. To me his work with its pain , self pitying and self absorbness seems all that is terribly wrong with modern mainstream poetry. Yet I found this book a worthy read. The editors do an excellent examination on how the poet's sad life created the poetry he wrote. I never read a better examination of the creative process in poetry. I wouldn't buy the book but I certainly go to the library to read it.

A REALLY BIG MARKET AND A WELCOME
The HERITAGE TALES anthology project is open to poetry but it has to be very long work of 60 pages or more such as ballads. For more details go to the publisher's web site http://www.pixiupress.com/ .Also a hello to the 12th person who now follows this blog. BTW if any of you has made a sale or has a publication out dont hesitate to post it here. For example the latest issue of ABANDONED TOWERS is going to have a poem by me, a Lovecraftian piece called 'The Pirates of Innsmouth' though it probably owes more to John Gay or Kurt Weil.

BOOK REVIEW OF WILD HUNT OF THE STARS
WILD HUNT OF THE STARS by Ann K. Schwader, Cedar Rapids IA; 2010, Sam's Dot, pb, $6.00, ISBN 978-0-9816365-0-4
Ann Schwader is one of the pillars of the hard sf poetry community. Many though not all the poems in the collection are about the sher and unbridled romance that is space travel. Not all her poems are cherry and optimistic. A fair number of the poems have a dark and nihilistic edge. Still I think this paragraph from the poem 'What Mars Need' represents both the heart of this collection and her life's work as a poet.
'What Mars needs are pyramids
rising from red plains
drifted with history,asteroid dust,
& a few cryptic fragments
of hope'
This is a must buy poetry collection.

BOOK REVIEW
POETRY IN PERSON ed. by Alexander Neubauer (New York; 2010, Alfred A. Knopf, hb $27.95, ISBN 978-0-307-26967-6 .
The book is a series of interviews of major American poets at the New School in Greenwhich Village over the past 30 year. They were interviewed by an English professor on why and how they wrote their poetry. In other words poets talk about their creative process when it comes to writing poetry. It is sort of a printed 'Actor's Studio' for poets.
This is a must have book for any serious poet's library.

A REVIEW DARKLY
DARK MATTERS by Bruce Boston, (Anaheim; 2010, Bad Moon) pb $17.95, ISBN-10, 0-9844601-5-2, ISBN-13, 978-0-9844601-5-1
This is the latest of the many fine speculative poetry collections written by Bruce Boston. Most of the poems in this collection are a new look on the paths through literature created by writers who are influences on Boston; Bradbury.Cocteau,Wallace Stevenson, E.R.R. Edison and the list goes on. There may be a few poems that do not harken back to the work of another writer but frankly I did not see any that fall in this category.
The title of the collection refers to the theory that 99 % of all matter in the universe is dark matter . Well the poems in this collection are the bright and visible stars in the creative universe of Bruce Boston.
This is a must have collection but all Boston collections fall in that category.

A TINY BIT OF MARKET NEWS
http://www.sciencefictionfantasyhorror.com/, the web sitethat buys poetry at is temporarilly closed.
WHAT I MEAN FROM SF/F/H
Whenever I use the term sf/f/h it means science fiction/fantasy/horror and related genres. Now I can spend paragraphs and paragraphs describing each of the three categories but instead I am going to use Green's Law. Green's Law states the following, 1. Whatever the editor of a science fiction periodical, anthology or other publication buys is a science fiction poem. Ditto for fantasy poem, ditto for horror poem. The definitions may be overly simplistic but it seems to work. What are your thoughts?

BOOK REVIEW
THE LIVING FIRE by Edward Hirsch (New York; 2010, Alfred A. Knopf) ISBN 978-0-375-41522-7 , hb, $27.00.
Edward Hirsch is amainstream literary poet who I find worth reading. He writes about his own response to cultural and literary and emotional themes but you find out more what he is writing about rather than knowing more than you want about the poet.
I was caught with the first poem in the collection and could not put the book down.
'The Begining of Poetry'
Railroad tracks split the campus in half
and at night you'd lie on your narrow cot
and listen to the lonely whistle
of a train crossing the prarie at night.
A collection worth buying.

THE IMPACT OF MY COMMENTS
My facetious remark about COYOTE WILD seems to have provoked people in a positive way. I want to post a poetry challenge to the readers of this blog. The late great Gabby Hayes was a stage actor before becoming Hollywood's arch Western sidekick. I already did this on a listserve a month or so ago but I am going to do it here. I would like to read a poem about doing important Shakespear monologues. Go wild. Just think of three Gabby Hayes in drag doing the witch scene from Macbeth.

ON SECOND THOUGHT
