A CORRECTION

I had an attack of typoitis when I reviewed the Turzillo/Simon collections.  For some obscure reason I called Marge Simon Meg Simon.  My apologies.

AN AUSTRALIAN MARKET THAT DOESN'T EMBRACE NON-AUSTRALIANS

AFTER THE RAIN anthology project is neither open to poetry or non-Aussies.

A CANADIAN MARKET THAT EMBRACES NON-CANADIANS

PRISM (http://prism.ca.ubc.ca/ ) is a well paying Canadian market that accepts work from non-Canadians.  Another well paying market is POETRY MAGAZINE (http://poetryfoundation.org/ ) is another at $10 per line.

A MARKET SLITHERS OUT TO POETS

Though their guidelines dont mention it the new df/h audio magazine PSEUDOPOD (http://pseudopod.org/ is a market for poetry but editor Ben Phillips pointed out that the poems have to be straight forward .  So if you send a poem to them it better not be wiggly.  The new general fiction magazine VARSITY PRINTS is not open to poetry.

One reader thinks I should start covering flash fiction markets.  What say you others?

FURTHER COMMENTS ON ROYALTIES

An academic poet contacted me away from the blog and told me that in her experience, poetry collections published by academic presses had no problem paying herroyalties.  For anyone who is reading this  who has a similair experience please post the reasons why academic presses do well in this category.  I have my theory but I want to hear from others begore I comment on it.  However I am still disinclined to report on anthology markets that are royalties only in payment.

AN APOLOGY

I made a slight error/typo in the last post.  Somehow I overlooked the fact that I did not mention that Turzillo was the co-author of the DRAGON SOUP collection.

THREE REVIEWS

YOUR CAT & OTHER SPACE ALIENS by Mary Turzillo, Berlin CT and Cleveland OH; 2007. vanZeno Press Professional Reading Series, $19.95, ISBN 978-0-9789244-0-9, pb

THE DRAGON DICTIONARY by Meg Simon and Mary Turzillo, Cedar Rapids, IA; 2010,Sam's Dot, $6.00, ISBN 978-1-935590-14-9, pb

DRAGON SOUP by Marge Simon & Mary Turzillo, Cleveland OH and Berlin CT, 2008, vanZeno Press Professional Reading Series,$19,95, ISBN 978-0-9789244-5-4, pb

First let me make this clear.  All three of these collections are well worth the price and well worth ordering, which you can do through Amazon the last I knew.  These collections are excellent showcases for something thats gets overlooked too often in poetry, humor.

The first collection is a whimisical which I know is an over used term but in this case well deserved.  The poems are about observations on the behavior of critters that are not human.  As you can tell from the title, cats and their moods are the focus of many of these poems.  It is not all humorous poetry.  For example there is a fine poem about Wayne Gacy titled 'Gacy' that is neither cute or cuddly.

'In Jack's dream
we live with John Wayne Gacy.
Something is wrong, Jack says, but I don't seem to care..."

However this first stanza from the poem 'Oath of the Moon' is more typical of the collection

"Whiskers smelling of milk and tuna,
he slink's into his mistress's bedroom
intent on rubbing against her legs
and, since he is tonight her same species,
further up.  Beware werecat's mistress,
the front claws, the barbed penis. ''"

THE DRAGON DICTIONARY is what it says it is.  Its basically a light hearted twist on Ambrose Bierce's  THE DEVIL'S DICTIONARY.    Only its aimed at D & D'ers and fans of light fantasy novels that have dragons on their covers.  Most of these definitions rvolve dragons and all their quibbles and dragony ways.  The definitions are interspered with poetry and the artful ilustrations created by Marge Simon..  It can be a little too cutesy for some but I enjoyed it and I usually have a low tolerance for cutesy.  However Simon'sketch of a lady dragon singing 'the hills are alive.." won me over.  Your daughter/female relative/female offspring of friends are going to love it.  Maybe it get their minds off of undernourished boy vampires.

DRAGON SOUP is not a collaboration but rather a collection of poems and flash fiction by Simon and a collection of poems and flash fiction.  Almost all the pieces are humorous work about dragons and illustrated by Simon.  As I said before I have a low toleration of whimsey but I enjoyed the poems and flash fiction.  You dont have to be a dedicated dracophile to enjoy this collection.  Like the previous collection it would make a great gift to wean young females from their fascination with wain male vampires and young lads with buxum vampirettes.  It is well worth buying it for tour self.

Do yourselff a favor for the gift buying season buy all three from Amazon and lo and behold this site has a portal to Amazon (hint).

STILL ANOTHER WELCOME

First a welcome to my 15th follower.  Secondly I now have a tweeter account but I still have to figure out how to access it.  Lastly before the day is finished I am going to do three book reviews; two are joint collections by Mary Turzillo and Marge Simon and the thirsd is a collection by Turzillo only which brings up a beef.

Mary is one of the most important poets working within the sf/f/h genres and she doesnt get much buzz.  I think the reason is an odd one at first.  She has many appearences in the major newsstand and commercial markets like ANALOG, ASIMOV'S and WEIRD TALES but that is also her problem.  Relatively few sf/f/h poetry fans read the major genre magazines.  Just check out how few poems that appear in ASIMOV'S gets nominated for the Rhyslings.  The other matter is that much of her work is humorous and humorous poems dont get the respect they deserve though she does get her fair share of Rhysling nominations.

There I feel better getting it off my chest.

THE LONG AND WINDING SUBMISSION PROCESS

According to a very good source WEIRD TALES should not be open to poetry until Jan., 2011.  So start holding your breth now.

THE CORRECT DECISION

Recently the sf/f/h poet as bwell as outstanding children/ya writer was elected the newest Grand Master by the members of the Science Fiction Poetry Association over df/h/Lovecraftian poet Richard Tierney.   Both poets were major poets in their own particular segments of sf/f/h literature.  Yolen was the right decision on purely pragmatic grounds.  A much wider audience is familiar with Yolen's work and career than with Tierney's.  Simply put you could do more in pr with Yolen than with Tierney.
