BOOK REVIEW

RETRO SPEC ed. by Karen A. Romanko (2010, Los Angeles; Raven Electric Ink)  ISBN 978-0-9819643-1-7 ,$14.95

RETRO SPEC is an anthology of prose and poetry that comments on American social, cultural and political history from the 20's trough the 40's.  This is the third Spec collection that Romanko has edited and published.  The previous two were about sports and sf/f/h cinema.  I am only going to comment on the poems.

They are wonderful.  The poetry represent broad range ,from humor to sorrow, from politics to passing fads and everything between.

My two favorites couldn't be more different from each other. 'Invasion, 1955' by Robert Borski is a view of the hula hoop fad as if it was a 1950's Flying Saucer invasion film.

'From seemingly out of nowhere they came,
not saucers but their smaller ringworld brethern
until almost everywhere you look
across the land,people are gyrating
in ectasy caught up in invasion...'

The other is' Rain Goddess ; The Dust Bowl, 1930's' by K. M. Preschak is an unnamed rain goddess hearing the cries of American farmers suffering during the Dust Bowl.  Woody Guthrie could have written this.

... Inside the prison of their barns, farmers weep.

In my enforced sleep I heard curses from Texas
to Saskatchewan as the land began to fail
...crops
yielded only pain...

Thisis a terrific collection that is well worth the price.

THE GREAT OLD ONES WOULD BE ANGRY

The HISTORICAL LOVECRAFT anthology project is closed to poetry.

AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE

First a sout to the newest foliower of this blog, and please post comments.  The df/h magazine DARK RECESSES is looking for six slushpile.  It is proably not a paying gig but might be an interesting and useful experience.  Contact its publisher Bailey Hunter at baileyhunter@darkrecesses.com.

HARD TO READ MARKET RESOURCE

I just came from a website devoted to podcast markets, http://www.podcastshuffle.com/ .Useful but my god dark blue lettering on black background; almost as bad as red or purple lettering on black  background.  Folks websites have to be legible in order to be fully useful.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A NIGHT MAKES

I did research for the previous post on flash fiction web sites last night.  I went back to them for some additional research and two of them have already been takeb down and the Terry Jones site no longer has data on flash fiction markets.  Data becomes obsolete on the internet real quick but this happened, you pardon the expression, in a flash.  Does anyone out there know of an uptodate user friendly website for flash fiction markets other than ralan and duotrope.

LOOKING FOR MARKETS THAT ARE NOT FLASHES IN THE PAN

I went looking for websites that would be useful for digging up flash fiction markets and I got floods of flash fiction market sites.  Other than going to the obvious ones like Ask.com, resourceswriterssuite101.com,info.comand absolutewriters.com here are some that have some precision; http://www.flashfiction.com/ , http://www.gregschwarts.blogspot.com/, and http://www.terryburns.net/. I especially liked the last one.

The following periodicals are closed right now; ExPatLit.com , FULL ARMOR MAGAZINE and THE RAVEN CHRONICLES .

The following publishers are not reading manuscripts right now, BatCat Press,Black Lantern Publishing, Blue House Press, Broomstick Books and SpringGun Press.

A NEW MARKET

I do not consider literary annuals to be periodicals but magazine styled anthologies .  That said the literary annual LABLETTER http://www.labletter.com/  is a paying market

IT CAN BE CONFUSING

Ovvassionally a report bubbles up through the internet that THE STRAND has been folded.  Dont believe it.  The magazine's publisher keeps a very irregular schedule and is slow in responding.  So keep a skeptical eye on all these announcements unless it comes directly from the magazine itself.  BTW is there anyone familiar with the Indiebound web site ?

HURRAY WE ARE READY FOR BUSINESS

A CHANGE FOR NEW ENGLAND REVIEW

NEW ENGLAND REVIEW's editor told me that in the fall they will accept on line submissions for poetry but not email submissions of poetry.  I dont quite see how one way is less onerous than the other way.  Can a computer savvy person explain ?

Also a shout out hello to the 17th follower or if that person prefers devotee.

TWO MORE THAT APPEAR TO BE GONE

BIG SPULP and ASTROPOETICA appear to be profoundly dormant if not officially dead.

THE ROADRUNNER WINS AGAIN

COYOTE WILD MAGAZINE appears to be truly dead and gone but you never know.

B&N IS ON BOARD

As you can see we now have an ad for the Nook from Barnes & Noble and that leads to their whole web site.

As for the word 'devotee' that sounds mildly erotic.

A SHOUT OUT TO MY 16TH FOLLOWER

I want to say welcome to my 16th follower.  I wish Google came up with a less cultish term.  What term do you folks who follow this blog think I should use.  Also by the end of this day a Barnes & Noble portal should be up.

I am going to do coverage of flash fiction markets and so here is the first entry.  FLASH ME MAGAZINE is on indefinite hiatus.

Regional magazines, especially those with a strong environmental focus can be paying markets for poetry.  An example is the Pacific Northwest regional magazine OPEN SPACES http://www.openspaces.com/
