A WEE BIT OF BAD FOREIGN NEWS

Alas the Indiab sf/f anthology project THE SPECULATIVE RAMAYANA ANTHOLOGY is closed to poetry.

It's P'rea Press

My typoitis struck again, its P'rea Press.

I did get a pdf copy of the Richard Tierney poetry collection SAVAGE MENACE AND OTHER POEMS ( Sydney ; 2010, P'rea) ISBN 978-0-9804625-5-5 ,$32.50 .  It s a great collection of Tierney poems.  What is there not to like.  You don't have to be a Lovecraft fan to love his work.  Unlike many prose and poetry writers in the Lovecraft canon his poetry usually does not suffer from an overabundance of consonants.

Also in print from this imprint ( in fact its strives to be the Arkham House of dark fantasy and horror poetry)and of strong interest to sf/f/h poetry fans are these titles;

RICHARD L. TIERNEY A BIBLIOGRAPHICAL CHECKLIST (2008),ISBN 978-0-9840625-0-0  (2008) $13.50.  The title explains its all.

SPORES FROM SHARNOTH AND OTHER MADNESSES by Leigh Blackmore, (2008), ISBN 978-0-9804-625-2-4  $13.50.  Blackmore is an Australian dark fantasy poet but I am unfamiliar with his work.

EMPERORS OF DREAMS; SOME NOTES ON WEIRD POETRY by S. T. Joshi (2009) ISBN 978-0-9804-625-3-1  $46.50.  The title describes the book, a collection of essays on weird poetry  by the foremost Lovecraft scholar ever and I have not yet seen the work.

The imprint has one US outlet; Gavin Smith, 3408 Pleasant Run Rd, Irving TX 75062-3255, http://www.gavinicussbooks.com/  .

A SLIGHTLY LONGER BRIEF NOTE

First the D.O.A. murder mystery anthology project is not open to poetry.  Now for something completely different.

I received a pdf copy of a Richard Tierney poetry collection from a new Australian publisher P'ear Press from Sydney.  When I get more data from the publisher,Danny Charles Lovecraft (yes its an assumed name) I shall be able to do a review.  This publisher has previously published a bibliography of Tierney's work and a collection of essays on weird poetry by famed Lovecraft scholar J.T. Joshi.  They also published a collection of the work of Leigh Blackmore and I have no idea who Leigh Blackmore is.  Does anyone out there reading this blog does know.

BRIEF MARKET NOTE

The mystery anthology project SNUFF SYNDICATE  is not open to poetry.

BOOK REVIEW OF THE SIMIAN TRANSCRIPT

THE SIMIAN TRANSCRIPT  by David C. Kopaska-Merkel (Saginaw,TX, Banana Oil,2009) ,pb ISBN; 978-1-935021-17-8, cover and illustration by Richard Svensson, introduction by Eric S. Brown, no cover price but copies are available from from the author (1300 Kicker Rd, Tuscaloosa AL 35404 for $16.00 plus $5.00 for shipping and handeling.

This is a collection of flash fiction rather than poetry.  However is clear to me if no one else that some of these pieces are clearly poems rather than very short stories.  To me the classification of what the piece is irrelevant.  They are all excellent examples of fine writing

My own personal favorite that is really a poem is 'wishes.com' in which a genie granting wishes is done in the form of an exchange of email messages.  Now this is a format, namely an exchange of letters was a popular form in F & SF during the fifties and sixties.  Though slight, this format was always effective in delivering the punch line and this one is no different.

My second favorite is a Lovecraftian piece 'Bah,Bah,Black Goat' which despite its title is a  serious Lovecraftian tale.  It can be described as a prose piece with injections of poetry or as a poem with interjection of prose.  I am sure there is a fine technical term for it but I can't think of it.

These two pieces show that Kopaska-Merkel does have a sense of humor because I usually tink of him as a very serious writer.

Anyway this is a collection worth reading and worth buying.

A MEA CULPA AND ANOTHER RESOURCE

tion Federation of State Poetry Societies.  It should be http://www.nfsps.com/  .Now another web site that you should be familiar with is http://www.newpages.com/.  It includes a strong list of literary magazines, an equally strong list of alternative mahgazines and a vast list of independent bookstores in North America .  Useful stuff for a writer or publisher or editor.

AN UNUSUAL RESOURCE

Poetry contests  are something that I have never been comfortable around and I am especially adverse to any contest with entry fees.  However there are those of us who seem to win coffee money all the time from entering poetry contests.  Let me recommend a good web resource in this area, http://www.nfps.com/ ,the site of the National Federation of Poetry Societies.

LOOKING FOR FILK IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES

I found at least two filk publishers along with their web sites; Random Factor http://www.random-factor.com/ and Prometheus Music at http://www.prometheus-music.com/.  I understand that there is a third, Wall Songs but I cant find its web site.

On another note, Warren Buff (please no Warren Buffet jokes) the co-chair of this year's NASFiC  ReConstruction being held in Raleigh  NC is strongly interested in having poetry programing at the con.  So google ReConstruction and pop in there in order to give ideas to Warren Buff.

ACH I FORGOT

I almost to forgot to mention that I plan to attend/email/ whatever the poetry panel at CoyoteCon next month.  CoyoteCon is the first online con and I find the idea fascinating.  Comments on it and the idea in general are welcome.

ODDS AND ENDS

First the 2010 RHYSLING ANTHOLOGY will be coming out soon  and I personally do not plan to review it until the balloting deadline for the awards is pass .  However if any of you want to post a comment about the collection including review all or part of it be my guest.  I still plan to do an analysis of  the collection as to the origin of the poems.  Once the deadlins for votes is past then I shall do a review.

Secondly I shall be posting within a few days an annotated list of filk song publishers and recording studios.

MORE BAD NEWS

The iregularlly appearing printzine DOORWAYS has closed its door forever.  Sorry I could not resist.

SLIGHTLY DEPRESSING NEWS

WEIRD TALES  is currently overstock on poetry and thus closed.  Is it just me or has WEIRD TALES has become merelya celeberty showcase.

I AM IRKED

There is a new webzine called SCRAPE that buys prose but does not buy poetry, they merely offer exposure.  Well in my state public exposure is against the law.  I do not plan to cover markets that treat poets as free sources of material while they buy prose.  I dont plan to alter this policy but I do want your comments.

LETS HEAR ABOUT POETRY PROGRAMMING

I want to hear about poetry programming (readings, workshops, paneld et al) that takes place at cons, other fannish events as well as at meetings of appropiate academic groups like SFRA and PCA.  For good measure throw filking in.

NOW FOR SOME GOOD MARKET NEWS BUT ITS OUTSIDE OF GENRE

The Cobblestone magazine LADY BUG which targets children 2-6 years does buy poetry, $25 minimum.  However all Cobblestone editorial staff can be rather prickly about guideline.  Check out their submission site at www.cobblestone.com/guide_LYB .

LANDFALL is a NZ general literary magazine that buys poetry but you have to be New Zealand or Pacific Islander or have some NZ connection.  It is not clear what they pay for poetry.  The submission web site is www.otago.ac.nz/press/landfall/submittingwork  .

MORE BAD MARKET NEWS

The British ezine TOWER OF LIGHT MAGAZINE is not open to poetry

NEGATIVE MARKET NEWS

The quarterly webzine MARGINAL BOUNDARIES  has revised its guidelines but it still does not plan to buy poetry.

MARKET NEWS

There is a new poetry/flash fiction biannual print/webzine called  POE LITTLE THING  They pay 5 cents per wd for flash fiction and 25 cents per line for poetry..  For details query Donna Burgess at nspbook@live.com  .

NOW THE NEWS IS SAD

Early today George Scithers passed away from complications from diabetes.  He was the first editor of ISSAC ASIMOV'S SCIENCE FICTION  MAGAZINE and early on established the magazine as the pre-eminent newsstand showcase for genre poetry.  At the same time THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION made a decision to stop buying poetry.  A strange decision for a magazine that proclaimed itself the 'NEW YORKER' of science fiction .  However it has started to buy poetry again but not at the level of IASFM.

After he left ASIMOV'S he went to AMAZING which already had established a policy of buying poetry.

NOW THE NEWS IS REALLY GOOD

The editor of  FOCUS has now announced that he shall pay three pounds for each poem he accepts for the next issue of the magazine but no promises beyond that.  His email ismartin.mcgrath1@ntlworld.com  .

THE BAD NEWS IS NO MORE

Literally within minutes of posting my last post , the editor of FOCUS emaied me and said that he is going to resume publishing poetry.

HURRAY

A LITTLE BAD NEWS

First I know that I misspelled the word 'Popular' in my previous post.  Now the real bad news.  FOCUS is a semi-annual magazine on  the art and craft of writing science fiction.  and is published by the British Science Fiction Society  They are now suspending its policy of publishing poems because they are not getting enough poems.

I am of two minds about this.  One is that normally I do not get too upset when  a non-paying market stops publishing poetry but FOCUS is an important showcase for poetry and technically its a fanzine or an academic journal or actually a combination of both.  I hope that it goes bacjk to publishing poetry.

I am going to end this post on a positive note.  Several twitterzines pays for poetry.  The  amount is token, $1-$5  but hey its the principal.  I would like to hear from people on their experience in submitting to twitterzines.

A BRIEF MARKET NOTE AND A REQUEST

The semi-annual webzine THE DREAM PEOPLE does not use poetry.  Now for the request.  If you been to any poetry function or panel at either a con or a writer's workshop or a presentation at an academic group like the Popoular Culture Association or SFRA  please post what you know of it.  I would also be interested in programing or events involving sport,mystery/suspense,historical adventure and western poetry.

THE GAME IS NOT AFOOT

The ELEMENTARY EROTICA anthology of erotic Sherlock Holmes stories with steampunk sensibilities is not open to poetry.

MARKET NEWS

BLACK WARRIOR REVIEW  is always a good mainstream literary market for poetry.  Always submit up to seven poems at any one time.  Their flat fee is $75.00 but I am sure that is for groups of poems.  Submiddion info is at bwrsubmission.ua.edu  .

SOME COMMENTS ON VISIBILITY

I had an interesting email conversation with a prominent sf/f/h art dealer.  I was trying to persuade her to buy short poetry for her catalogue in order to highlight and further promote her inventory.  Ultimately she said no because she thought the use of poems or short fiction or essays distracts the reader of the catalogue from its essential purpose of selling the dealer's inventory.  What do you think?  Give me your thoughts on this.

BOOK REVIEW

ON  MONSTERS by StephenT. Asma (NYC; Oxford University Press, 2009) hb ISBN 978-0-19-533616-0  $27.95.

This is not a poetry collection.  It is an interesting and fast paced look on the nature, creation and origins of monsters in cultures and media.  Monsters whether they be natural or mythic, human or alien, our own delusions or real threat, represents an important theme and icon in poetry.  Especially the kind of poetry this blog is all about.  It ought to be in your library of useful resources when it comes to writing poetry.

A QUESTION ABOUT CYBERWIZARD PRODUCTIONS

I have a question  I have been to the web site of Cyberwizard Productions.  It just seemks to me to good to be true.  Does anyone have any input on dealing with them, good, bad or indifferent.  I have an inquiring mind and I want to know.

A CORRECTION IS IN ORDER

Apparently BULL SPEC does use poetry.  They used two poems in its first issue and apparently one is scheduled for their second issue.  Still I would query them at editor@bullspec.com.

If a publication's guidelines say they dont use or even mention poetry query them any way.  It doesn't hurt to ask.  On the other hand they may decide to drop poetry without changing their guidelines immediately to reflect new policies.

HURRAY MY FIRST OPEN ANTHOLOGY MARKET TO REPORT

A new reprint anthologyBEST NEW VAMPIRE TALES  from Books of the Dead Press is open to poetry.  Query the editor James Roy Daley at   besthorror2@gmail.com for more details.

I SHOULD READ WHAT PEOPLE SEND TO ME

I guess BULL SPEC is changing its mind about poetry but I would like nto hear from other readers before I can tell if its a change in policy or just a passing whimsey.  BTW this may sound change but I occasionally have problem accessing my own blog.  Is this an occasional annoyance for bloggers.  I would like to hear.

STILL MORE MARKET NEWS

The new semi-pro webzine GIGANOTOSAURUS is not open to poetry.  Some of you may wonder why I post market news so frequently.  My feeling is that breaking news should be immediately posted.  Market news is like fish, it should be as fresh as possible.

STILL MORE MARKET NEWS

The semi-prozine WITHERSHINS is no lomger a paying market.

MORE MARKET NEWS

The  fear of the dark anthology project is not open to poetry.  BOOOOOOO.

GENERAL COMMENTS

A reader asked if I would review crowdfunded publications and the answer is yes.

Also the new webzine DARKER is not accepting poetry now but shall do so in the future.

BOOK REVIEW

THE BIG BOOK OF NECON  edited by Bob Booth,( Forrest Hill, MD,2009, Cemetery Dance) 312 pages no cover price listed,hb ISBN 978--1-58767-202-6  andISBN 1-58767-202-2

As I am sure that many of you know NECON is a major horror/dark fantasy convention that is principally attended by horror pros and would be pros to talk about horror and dark fantasy.  There are panels, panels panels and the occasional  publisher's party. Nothing fannish, no costumes,no masquerades.  It has been held for over 30 years usually at Roger Williams University at Bristol RI.

This is a collection of stories and poetry that has appeared in Necon program books and other published Necon publications and all written by Necon participants.  I am just going to talk about the poetry.

Much of the poetry is about being at Necon and it is boring if you never been to Necon or not a convention goer to begin with then much of the poetry is forgettable.  The poetry that is not overtly Necon oriented is quite good.

There is one poem that stands head and shoulders above the rest and its by Linda Addison who doesn't even know how to write a bad poem.  Even though its about the Necon experience it is  truly about more than just that.  Her 'Dark Campers' is about the creative process that starts when writers, editors and artists come together to talk about their craft.  Three words represent the core of the poem 'we dissect dreams...'

From a poetry perspective wait until this book finds its way on remainder tables despite the Addison poem.

More Market News

The AMUSING MONSTERS MASHUP anthology project is closed to poetry.  Now that I am thinking about it, wouldn't it bea great idea to have a Best of collection of poetry that appeared in MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION, ditto for ASIMOV'S, ditto for WEIRD TALES.  Just a thought

Tomorrow I will post my first boook review.

MARKET NEWS

Alas the horror anthology project DEAD BAIT 2 is not open to poetry.

A Mainstream Market

Because of a deluge of adverse comments I wont write in all caps any more.  BTW dont tell a mainstream market you are sending them a sf/f/h poem.  Say its speculative or magic realism or wiccan or whatever.  Any way the INDIANA REVIEW,  a semi-monthly located at Indiana University pays $5 per page for poetry.  Their guidelines are at indianareview.org/general guide.

MORE SAD MARKET NEWS

tWO  ANTHOLOGY PROJECTS  FEAR OF THE DARK  AND TIME OF TROUBLE WILL NOT BE OPEN TO POETRY.

MARKET NEWS

ALAS THREE NEW SF/F/H PRINT OR WEB ZINES ARE NOT OPEN TO POETRY;  BULL SPEC, RED STONE SCIENCE FICTION AND SINGULARITY.

RECOMENDATION AND OTHER COMMENTS

FIRST THE REASON WHY I AM WRITING IN ALL CAPS IS THAT I AM VERY NEAR SIGHTED.  I WANT TO BE ABLE TO READ MY OWN BLOG..  NOW I HAVE BEEN TO MANY MARKET WEB SITES AND I HAVE TO SAY THAT MY FAVORITE IS http://www.ralan.com/ IF YOU ARE A SF/F/H POET.  I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR YOUR COMMENTS ON  THIS MATTER.

NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.  THIS YEAR THE TWO WRITERS HAVE BEEN NOMINATED FOR GRAND MASTER THIS YEAR BY THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE SCIENCE FICTION POETRY ASSOCIATION.  ONE IS JANE YOLEN WHO NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION AND THE OTHER IS RICHARD TIERNEY WHO IS KIND OF OBSCURE UNLESS YOUR FAMILIAR WITH DARK FANTASY AND HORROR.  BOTH DESERVE IT BUT ALAS THE RULES OF THE SCIENCE FICTION POETRY ASSOCIATION PERMIT ONLY ONE PERSON TO BE HONORED AS GRAND MASTER PER YEAR.  NOW THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY PROFESSIONAL CREATIVE GROUPS HAVE GRAND MASTERSHIPS AND AN IMPORTANT ONE IS PUBLICITY FOR THIER FIELD.  BASED ON JUST THAT YOLEN IS THE OBVIOUS CHOICE.

THIS IS THE PROBLEM WITH GRAND MASTERSHIPS.  YOU REALLY CANT PICK MORE THAN ONE BECAUSE IT DILUTES THE IMPACT OF THESE HONORS BUT DO THESE AWARDS ULTIMATELY DO MORE HARM TO THESE GROUPS.  COMMENTS ARE WELCOME.

LASTLY I WILL REVIEW SELF PUBLISHED WORK.  PLEASE KNOW I AM PREJUDICED AGAINST SELF PUBLISHING BUT I DO REALIZE THAT MUCH GOOD WORK IN POETRY IS SELF PUBLISHED.

Tuesday, April 6, 2010

WELCOME TO MY BLOG

THIS IS THE FIRST POSTING OF MY BLOG ON SF/F/H POETRY PLUS SOME PROSE .  I DO NOT PLAN TO GOSSIP ABOUT THE INNER WORKINGS OF THE SCIENCE FICTION POETRY ASSOCIATION OR ANY OTHER PROFESSIONAL OR FANNISH GROUPS.  IT  IS MY INTENT TO WRITE REVIEWS OF GENRE POETRY, REPORT MARKET NEWS AND GENERALLY COMMENT ON GOING ONS THAT AFFECT OR OTHERWISE IMPACT ON POETRY IN THE THREE GENRES.

NOW TWO QUICK EGO SHOUTS ABOUT MYSELF.  BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS I AM GOING TO BE THE POETRY ADVISOR OF THE POETRY PAGE OF http://www.aboutsf.com/ . THE SITE IS DEVOTED TO THE TEACHING OF SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY AND IS A PROJECT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS.  ALSO I AM AN EXAMINER FOR THE DISTANCE LEARNING MASTER'S OF CREATIVE WRITING PROGRAM OPERATED BY WARNBOROUGH COLLEGE IN DUBLIN IRELAND.

I WELCOME COMMENTS AND DONT BE AFRAID TO WRITE.
