BOOK REVIEW
BLOOD WALLAH AND OTHER POEMS by Robert Borski ( Colusa, CA,2011, Dark Regions ) ISBN978-1-937128-12-8, $9.95
this is the first poetry collection by prolific poet Robert Borski. Previously the poet published two collections of critical essays on Gene Wolfe. Borski's style is a lean and brittle style of mannered decadence that harks to mainstream lifgt fantasy writers like Thorne Smith and Ogden Nash.
Many but not all the poems make the comparison of blood to wine. The first three lines of the title poem ' Blood Wallah' is an excellent illustration of this theme in the collection.
' While non-hemophiles may disagree
it is easily the most complexbeverage
there is in terms of depth ...'
This is a recommended buy

BOOK REVIEW AND SHOUT OUT
First let me give a shout out and hello to the 45th followers of this blog. Now on to the review.
SURREALITIES by Bruce Boston ( Colusa, CA; 2011, Dark Regions; ISBN 978-1-937120 ) pb, $9.95 . This latest Boston collection is devoted to surreal poems by Boston, both reprints and new poems original to this collection. I generall prefer surreal poems to be short ( less than ten lines ) and clearly mainstream but incorperating genre sf/f/h/slipstream elements. The Boston poems are longer and are usually within the sf/f/h genres. Boston being Boston I find that his poems generally work for me despite my quibbles. This is a must buy collection.
BTW myt favorite lines in the collection are these from the poem ' Dali's Ego On Karloff's Frankenstein '.
'I would give him color
and drench him in absolute

Over 100 poems have been nominated for the Rhysling this year and there is not a bad poem in the bunch. Once again there are very few nominees ( exactly one ) coming from ASIMOV'S and none from SPACE & TIME and only onr from a non-genre publication NEW YORKER.
There was a time when mainstream poets were frequent Rhysling winners and many Rhysling nominations came from mainstream literary magazines. Now the nominations come from STRANGE HORIZONS, STAR*LINE, MYTHIC DELERIUM, GOBLIN FRUIT and DREAMS ANDNIGHTMARES. The community of sf/f/h poets and publications is growing but it seems even more like a smll town.
BTW as usual this is an essentialcollection for alldedicated sf/f/h poetry readers to have.
Now on to markets notes.
KIDSMAGINATION is not currently buying poetry but that should change true.
READ FICTION ( http://www.readfiction.com/ ) is a new market.
ASHEVILLE POETRY REVIEW and FLASHQUAKE are closed to submissions.

BOOK REVIEW OF SKELETON LEAVES
SKELETON LEAVES by Helen Marshall ( Toronto, 2011, Kelp Queen ) ISBN 978-0-9876959-12-3, no price listed, website at http://kelpqueenpress.com/
The chapbook is a series of long poems that takes a deep look at the famed literary character Peter Pan and the society he lived in. This is not your Disney's Pan and neither is it Barre's Pan.
The Pan in this collection is erotic as described in the poem ' The Secret of Durable Pigment
I look upon you-gost god, boy god
and dream the secret of durable pigment,
dead leaves to inscribe with fingerling poems.
The poet perceives Peter Pan as an avatar of the god Pan , embodying both his eroticism and as described in the poem 'Aurochs and Angels' his lethal ruthlessness towards the Lost Boys who start to age..
"...and when they seem to be growing up,
which is against the rules,
Peter thined them out. "
Another line from that particular poem fully describes the essence of Marshal's take on Peter Pan.
"...you couldn't care, Peter,
my joy.
For that was the magic of it, "
This is a collection worth buying.
the heartlessness of it all. "
Peter thins them out. "

A SHOUT OUT AND A COMPLAINT
First a shout out and a hello to our 43 rd follower of this blog. Now lets get on with my complaint. As far as I can tell ther is only one literarymagazine based at an Ivy League campus that is a paying market for poetry, the YALE REVIEW. All the other publications at the eight Ivy League schools are not. If I overlooked another publication please let me know at this blog. To me its disgraceful and if you agree or disagree then let me and your fellow blog followers know. I woyld point out that literary magazines based at much poorer colleges like Antioch , Sewanee, Drew and even some junior colleges are paying markets.
Just a reminder; Father's Day is coming up and if you are going to get a Father's Day Gift from Amazon or Barnes & Noble then please enter btheir web sites through the portals on this web site, I would also think that my sf/f/h poetry collection available at http://www.speakingvolumes.us/ ,Amazon, Amazon ( UK ) and Barnes & Noble would make a fine gift.

The British Fantasy Society has several prestigious journals within its portfolio of journals. Some of them are paying markets and some are not. Read their submission guidelines very carefully. Make sure in your cover letter cleary states that you are submitting to a paying market. A NOTE ABOUT A BOOK
TILL I END MY SONG ( ed. by Harold Bloom , NYC ; 2011, Harper ) ISBN 978-0-06-192305-0 , is a general poetry collection. It is not intended to be a speculative or sf/f/h poetry collection. Yet many of the poems do have speculative/sf/f/h elements and one poem, ' Space Walking ' by R. S. Thomas is a speculative poem. I am not reviewing the book but merely point to it as still another proof thatmainstream poetry is becomingg more and more open to sf.f.h.speculative motiffs and language.

TEN TIPS TO PROMOTE YOUR POETRY COLLECTION
It is a fact of life that poets have to take an active hand in promoting their poetry collections . Most poetry publisher are two or three person operations that are going to rely on the efforts of their authors in order to promote their titles. Below are ten ways that poets can help themselves and their publisher.
1. Send press releases to the arts/entertainment editors of local news media about the publication of your collection and include info on how to get a review copy.
2...Send the same press releases to newsletters of local poetry and writers' groups.
3. Send press release to the alumni magazine/newsletter of your high school, college and graduate school alma mater .
4. Contact the following libraries and let them that the book is in print and where it can be ordered; local public library (both where you are currently and where you grew up ), the libraries of your alma maters, the state library, the libraries of the principal state universities, local state and private colleges in your area, local high and junior high schools in your area if they are not your alma mater, state and local historical societies.
5. Contact the list serves and newsletter of any writers, poetry, fannish and general professional groups that you belong to.
6. Let the chain and independent bookstores in your area know about the book and where it can be ordered.
7. Let the bookstores of your alma mater know about the book and where it can be ordered.
8. If you teach then let the libraries of where you teach know about the book as well as letting your school's newspaper/magazine know about the book
9. Get to as many open mike poetry readings that you can schedule in .
10. Try to book yourself as a guest on as many local radio and TV shows that you can.

A MIX OF THINGS
First a shout out and hello to this blog's 42nd follower.
HEALING WAVES ( http://skywarriorforum.com/ )is an anthology that is raising money for diaster relief in Japan. It is not a paying market but since it is a fundraiser for humanitarian purposes so I find it appropiate for it to be mentioned here since it invoves one of the exceptions I follow when it comes to submitting to non-paying markets.
The df/h British webzine DARK METRE ( http://www.kathybennett.co.uk/ ) is open to submissions and is open to previously published poems.

AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE
Earlier this afternoon I did a segment on a local radio talk show, 'Crosswinds " on WSMN 1590AM in Nashua NH. The time spent on the show was less than I wanted but the time could have been two hours and I still would think it was not long enough. Was it worth the time. Yes because anytime you can be on the air ( and not make a fool of your self ) to promote your work and career is time well spent. I would especially want to hear from other poets about their own experiences on radio and local television shows.

ANOTHER TYPO
I am embarrassed but I realized that I overlooked another error. A couple of posts ago I wrote that DETWXTIVE HORROR is pen to poetry. I meant to write that DETECTIVE HORROR is open to flash fiction. BTW its not me who is putting enormous spaces between my latest posts and the previous one. Its Google being just weird.
MARKET DATA
The antho project DETECTIVE HORROR is not open to poetry.

A REQUEST FOR COMMENTS
As most of you know many of the ezines that have emerged in the sf/f/h market also include an annual print issue. Many though not all contracts for sale of prose and poetry cover two things; initial right to use the piece in the issue. It frequently includes non-exclusieve reprint anthology right. This is my question to you folks; do you think that your poem appears ( and is paid for ) in the ezine. Now they want to reprint the poem for free in the annual print issue. What would you decide. Say yes and let them to use it or say no and refuse to have the poem appear in the annual print issue. What would you do and why ?

OOPPSS A BIG MISTAKE
I must apologise I wrote a publisher's name and url terribly wrong. Its Silver Boomer Books not Silver Books and its correct web address is http://silverboomerbooks.com/ . Again my apologies for an inexcusable mistake.
MARKET NOTE
RALEIGH REVIEW ( http://www.raleighreview.org/ ) is open to both poetry and flash fiction.
Just a little note; many ezines that are paying markets also do an annual print zine but it is often not clear if the work in the annual issue is either original or a 'best of' from the preceding year's ezine issues.

USEFUL WEB SITE
Whenever I find a web site that might be a useful tool in finding markets for poetry it usually has a major problem. They are two, three or more years out of date. Well I finally found a current useful site. It is www.thehorrorzine.com/listsofdarkzines . It is a list of url's of df/h webzines divided into three sections, fiction, poetry and flash fiction. It includes both paying and non-paying markets.
This list brings to mind an important fact. In the United States we have Borders preparing to close at least 26 stores with more on the way to be shuttered. In Canada a major distributor has closed down. If this had happened ten years ago it would be a very serious problem for poetry markets since most of them would be printzines and many of them would be dependent on wholesale distributors and physical bookstores.
Now so many of the markets are ezines which are sold directly to readers. Even printzines have taken advantage of direct customer sales through the web plus there are at least two web retailors that specialize in sf/.f/h titles, Horror Mall and Genre Mall..

A NOTE TO THE READERS
A follower of this blog contacted me privately to ask me this question. Is this blog intenfded to be strictly a sf/f/h oriented blog or is it to cover all kinds of markets for poetry ?
Let me answer it this way. First I cover all zines, print and electronic , as long as they pay for poetry and flash fiction. However when I do commentary and observations it is going to focus on sf/f/df/h/mystery/suspense poetry. Further when I cover anthology markets I am going to focus only on those that buy sf/f/h/df/suspense poetry and only if they pay a fixed fee . I do not include anthologies that pay only royalties because it seema there are never royalties to be paid.
Lastly I include flash fiction markets for two reasons. The first is that it expands the number of markets I can cover in this blog. The second is that I cannot tell the difference between flash fiction and prose poems. Further no one else can tell the difference between the two forms. So I include flash fiction markets in the blog's coverage.

A REQUEST AND A LITTLE BAD NEWS
First I want to know from the followers of this blog to let me know what I can do to improve my blog other than do a better job of copy editing which is a problem related to my eyesight. Either comment on the blog or contact me directly at sgreen@grolen.com . Also if you have been entering the advertisor portals on my site ( BARNES & NOBLE, POWELL'S ,AMAZON ) please let me know at my personal email address, sgreen@grolen.com . I suspect that there is an error in Google software.
Now the bad news. As some of you may know already Borders Bookstores is closing and that means hundreds of sites that sell magazines which are themselves paying markets for poetry. I am sure that poetry markets are going to close down because of this or are they ? Folks please comment.

Further in their section on the year in sf/f/h magazines there was no mention at all about the numerous titles of Sam's Dot.

I have not reported this becausenone of the reports have included a confirmation from her own corporate offices that her magaz ine Now there is no payment rate found in her magazine's submission and guidelines online site. However I have found that many paying markets do not mention payment rates ib their submission guidelines section. So I am holding off on further comment on this matter until there is confirmation that the magazine is definitely not going to pay for poetry.

BOOK REVIEW
DIARY OF A GENTLEMAN DIABOLIST by Robin Spriggs (San Francisco; 2010, Anomalous Books ) pb,ISBN 13; 978-0-963-4296-7-5 ISBN; 10; 0-9634296-7-1 $12.95.
This is a terrific collection of prose poems about a genial diabolist. I visualize Vincent Price as the diabolist. The problem for me is this. Spriggs calls her work prose poems but they seem just as well to call them flash or micro fiction. I have said this before and I am going to say it again.
What is the difference between flash fiction and prose poetry ? None that I can see.
Still this is an excellent collection that is well worth the price. Below is an example of this outstanding collection.
' Bringing It Back'
"I'm glad we met," said the mage to the dog that had died a year ago to the day but whose ghost-unfailingly loyal-had remained with him nonetheless.
Throw the ball, thought the dog. Throw the ball. Throw the ball. and I'll bring it back.

A QUANDRY
There is a semi-prozine, SAVAGE KICK LITERARY MAGAZINE that is a paying market for all kinds of genre action fiction.I have no knowledge if it is also a market for poetry or if it is not a market for poetry. However its website is so dark and incomprehensible that I cannot find a contact email address. Does anyone have an email contact for this zine. If so please send it to me at sgreen@grolen.com .so I can contact the magazine.
IT IS OFFICIALLY HERE
My new blog, www.examiner.com/poetry-in-manchester/scott.green is officially up and running with its first post.
BOOK REVIEW
DWARF STARS 2010 ed. by Joshua Gage (2010, no city listed,SCIENCE FICTION POETRY aSSOCISTION) $7.00, AVAILABLE AT aMAZON.COM .
Every year the Science fiction Poetry Association conducts the DWARF STARS Awards for the best short sf/f/h poem of ten lines or less. The purpose of the contest is to showcase ultra short poems , a length that often gets overlooked outside of Asian poetry circles. The poems nominated are terrific and this year's nominees are no exception. I do have some personal issues with the purpose and running of the contest but that is insider stuff.
Below are three of the outstanding poems in the collection.
'Night Phenomenon' by Marge Simon
Night is feeling sexy
a fogbow inher hair
untitled poem by Noel Slobode
tattered flesh
dropping off
the wolf within
'Alien Invasion' by Peter Payack
These words
are now
inside your head
Buy and enjoy.
