A REQUEST FOR COMMENTS

As most of you know many of the ezines that have emerged in the sf/f/h market also include an annual print issue.  Many though not all contracts for sale of prose and poetry cover two things; initial right to use the piece in the issue.  It frequently includes non-exclusieve reprint anthology right.  This is my question to you folks;  do you think that your poem appears ( and is paid for ) in the ezine.  Now they want to reprint the poem for free in the annual print issue.  What would you decide.  Say yes and let them to use it or say no and refuse to have the poem appear in the annual print issue.  What would you do and why ?

SF/F/H MARKET NOTES

STAR*LINE ( http://www.sfpoetry.com/ ) is open for submissions.

OOPPSS A BIG MISTAKE

I  must apologise I wrote a publisher's name and url terribly wrong.  Its Silver Boomer Books not Silver Books and its correct web address is http://silverboomerbooks.com/ .  Again my apologies for an inexcusable mistake.

MARKET NOTE

RALEIGH REVIEW ( http://www.raleighreview.org/ ) is open to both poetry and flash fiction.

Just a little note; many ezines that are paying markets also do an annual print zine but it is often not clear if the work in the annual issue is either original or a 'best of' from the preceding year's ezine issues.

USEFUL WEB SITE

Whenever I find a web site that might be a useful tool in finding markets for poetry it usually has a major problem.  They are two, three or more years out of date.  Well I finally found a current useful site.  It is www.thehorrorzine.com/listsofdarkzines .  It is a list of url's of df/h webzines divided into three sections, fiction, poetry and flash fiction.  It includes both paying and non-paying markets.

This list brings to mind an important fact.  In the United States we have Borders preparing to close at least 26 stores with more on the way to be shuttered.  In Canada a major distributor has closed down.  If this had happened ten years ago it would be a very serious problem for poetry markets since most of them would be printzines and many of them would be dependent on wholesale distributors and physical bookstores.

Now so many of the markets are ezines which are sold directly to readers.  Even printzines have taken advantage of direct customer sales through the web plus there are at least two web retailors that specialize in sf/.f/h titles, Horror Mall and Genre Mall..

A NOTE TO THE READERS

A follower of this blog contacted me privately to ask me this question.  Is this blog intenfded to be strictly a sf/f/h oriented blog or is it to cover all kinds of markets for poetry ?

Let me answer it this way.  First I cover all zines, print and electronic , as long as they pay for poetry and flash fiction.   However when I do commentary and observations it is going to focus on sf/f/df/h/mystery/suspense poetry.  Further when I cover anthology markets I am going to focus only on those that buy sf/f/h/df/suspense poetry and only if they pay a fixed fee .  I do not include anthologies that pay only royalties because it seema there are never royalties to be paid.

Lastly I include flash fiction markets for two reasons.  The first is that it expands the number of markets I can cover in this blog.  The second is that I cannot tell the difference between flash fiction and prose poems.  Further no one else can tell the difference between the two forms.  So I include flash fiction markets in the blog's coverage.
