BOOK REVIEW

THE LIVING FIRE  by Edward Hirsch (New York; 2010, Alfred A. Knopf) ISBN 978-0-375-41522-7 , hb, $27.00.

Edward Hirsch is amainstream literary poet who I find worth reading.  He writes about his own response to cultural and literary and emotional themes but you find out more what he is writing about rather than knowing more than you want about the poet.

I was caught with the first poem in the collection and could not put the book down.

'The Begining of Poetry'

Railroad tracks split the campus in half
and at night you'd lie on your narrow cot
and listen to the lonely whistle
of a train crossing the prarie at night.

A collection worth buying.
