REVIEW
THE OXFORD BOOK OF PARODIES ed. by Jon Gross (NY; 2010; Oxford University Press ) ISBN 978-0-19-954882-8, $29.95, hb
The book is a big collection of literary parodies including many of major and not so major poems It is a very useful resource on how to do parodies, showing by example. I particularly enjoyed the very first poem in the collection ,a parody of Old Saxon verse.
Old-Saxon Fragment
Syng a song of Saxons
In the Wapentake of Rye
Four and twenty eaoldormen
Too eaold to die...
Well worth the price

MAGAZINE REVIEW
Recently I received a pdf copy of the first issue of a new df/h/crime magazine BETE NOIRE .
I was impressed by the fact that the magazine had four long poems of a noirish nature and three of the poets are fairly prominent, two mainstream poets Krikor N. Der Hohannesian and J. J. Steinfeld, Bruce Boston who needs no further introduction and an unknow, Florence Grey. I had mixed feelings about the four poems. Der Hohannesian's poem, 'Of Moths, Junkies And Other Ephemera ' was a long and 'Beat' style poem about junkies that I did not like. I have never been an admirer of'beat' poetry and this one was no exception. The J. J. Steinfeld's poem was a long introverted poem in which the poet debates on whether he should stop writing. I am not quite sure why the poem was in this magazine but neither did I care to know the outcome of the debate.
Now I did like the Boston poem, 'The lateral Eclipse of Bound Sunsets'. I am not quite sure what it was about but it seemed to be a homage to Clark Ashton Smith's flowery poetry about really gegenerate villains, 17th century Euro trash vampires but without the flamboyant language of Smith. At least that was what I thought it was. I am not wuite sure but that is the fun of reading a Boston poem, you are never quite sure what he is writing about. The Grey poem,"Hallow's Eve', was a homage to Halloween in general, fannish but fun to read since it some how was both dark and moody but still cheery and cheeky at the same time. A remarkable accomplishment.
Any way when it came to poetry this issue was batting .500 and that is pretty good. The magazine is recommended.
For info about subscripyions go to their site, http://www.betenoiremagaxine.com/.

BOOK REVIEW
CHEMIICKAL REACTIONS by Karen Newman, currently available only in e-book from http://www.smashwords.com/ for $1.99, published by Naked Snake Press.
It is sometime hard to remember that Karen is more than a prolificeditor editor of the countless zines and anthologies put out by Sam's Dot Publishing. She is also an outstanding poet in the sf/f/h and mystery genres. This anthology reminds us that she is an outstanding poet.
CHEMICKAL REACTIONS is a collection of poems about chemicals, both compounds and pure elements. Many of the poems are mystery/police procedural/suspense genres. This collection should bring welcome attention to an overlooked form for the mystery writer, the poem. Below is a poem about bleach that is typical of the high level of skill and excellence in the collection. It is well worth ordering.
" Bleach "
First Mary mopped
the floor with bleach,
smearing clean the beatings,.
Then she bleached
her clothes and towels
to wash away the blame.
Finally,she bleached
her eyes white to hide
the knife in her husband's heart.

REVIEWS AND A LITTLE MARKET NOTE
First the market note; ABYSS & APEX is closed to submissions.
Before I start the reviews I have been getting spam from Barnes & Noble that they now have Black Friday sales going on now so perhaps some of you readers may want to go to B&N through their portal on my blog.
Now on to the reviews.
The two titles I am reviewing are both by Hilltop Press located at 4 Nowell Place ,Almondbury,Huddeersfield,HB5 8PB England. This is the imprint of Steve Sneyd who is one of the pre-eminent sf/f/h poet and historian of sf/f/h poetry. He has neither ebook address or web site. So all his communication has to be postal. His titles are distributed by BBR/NSFA www.bbr-online.com/catalogue .You may also want to check Powell's and Amazon iff BBR /NSFA may be out of the title.
MISTAKING THE NATURE OF THE POSTHUMAN by Steve Sneyd (2008) ISBN 978-0-905262-42-0 $15.00 for Yanks and 6.99 pounds for Brits..
This is a collection of previously published work which has appeared in mostly genre periodicals like DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES and STAR*LINE. I cant praise Sneyd enough. He has been writing genre poetry for at least 25 years but , at least still in this country is underread because so much of his work has appeared in the smallest of small press zines. Below are three short poems by him that demonstrate his mastery of poetry . It is a collection worth the money.
' Mission Statement'
comes bringing occult
into daylight world promise
on t-shirt sprouts gold
hair will show what nothingness
made of tides Schrodinger's cat
'Ozymandias of Mars '
Jack's giant fell up
not down off two-worlds-linking
tree slowdying still,
lasted long enough to breath last
air, drink last water,kill world.
'Not Too Proud To Learn'
maggots into wounds
eat infection leave healthy
flesh to heal unscarred
aliens learn fast eat thoughts
of humans leave perfect gods
TIME GROWS THIN by Lilith Lorraine (2009) ISBN 978-0-905262-13-7 $15.00 US or 7.50 pounds.
This book can be a little complicated to explain. Lilith Lorraine was the byline of Mary Maud Donn, a poet who during the 30's, 40's and into the 50's was one of the dominant poets in the science fiction/fantasy/horror genre. The book itself is a combination of one of her post-World War II poetry collections, WINE OF WONDER, a thirty one page biographical essay on Lorraine's career by Steve Sneyd plus a small selection of other poems by her.
I do not plan to rehash what Sneyd wrote about Lorraine but I think it is ground breaking. It is the first eshaustive study on the use of poetry in the pulp era that does not revolve around its use by WEIRD TALES . I apologise now if someone else has written extensively on this era of sf/f/h poetry and I can think of one person in particular who may have done so.
If you are interested in the history of sf/f/h poetry then this should be in your library. Besides the poems are terriffic if a little plummy to some. Its like automobilr collecting. If you collect Ford and Shelby Mustangs then probably you are not going to get excited over a 1927 Dusenberg or a 1950 Humber Snipe. You might like them but they wont pass the so hat test in your eyes becuse your heart belongs to Mustang.

CONCERNING TONY ANGELO
I have no hard evidence but the Tony Angelo that I wrote about in the last post may be young car racing hero Tony Angelo.
I AM SUSPICIOUS
I have been trying to reach the editor of a general arts magazine, REALM OF NUANCE but no matter what I do my emails get blovked. I think that there is something odd about this venture since it seems spun off from aa web page devoted to teaching people how to do ezines. The editor of the magazine is a Tony Angelo. Does any one know this fEllow's background ? Please post.

A CRYPTID MAGAZINE
There is a new horror magazine being launched today called CHUPACABRA. Its face book page does not have a provision for sending messages or putting stuff on the wall. They are mentioned on a web site called BLOODY DISGUSTING. Does anyone have a handle on them. Also the Black Library which publishes all the War Hammer books is planning an ezine though the release I read about it does not actually say that the zine is going to be a War Hammer zine but I queried them to see if they are a market for either poetry or flash fiction. No rresponse yet. BTW if you think that there are any additioNal portals that I should put on the site, email me at sgreen@grolen.com.

A SOMEWHAT MORE USEFUL SITE
I am not a fan or even a token supporter of self publishing. However it is a still legetimate strategy but I ont normally cover it in this blog. So this ia the one exception . At the web site http://www.writerscircle.com/. It has a board within its forum that is devoted to self publishing and its issues. Its worth a look as I said before if you contemplate self publishing.
A NOT VERY USEFUL SITE
http://www.poetrymagazines.or.uk/ could be auseful site. I is a long annotated directory of British literary magazine. However most if not all are equivalent to our stste poetry societis and as far as I can tell are non-paying markets

tThe proposed revival of DREAMS OF DECADENCE hasn't come about yet so I would refrain from submitting to it until further notice or someone out there has a scoop on its fate.
The new podzine BLUE DREAMS submission guidelines does not say they buy poetry but they also do not say that they dont buy poetry. WOW A TRIPLE NEGATIVE. So I have queried them and when I know you shall know.

A CORRECTION
One of the web sites I listed before, THE MARKET LIST, is defunct. I thought something was off when the url I had for it sometimes worked and sometimes not. And when I did get thee it became evident that the list had not been updated for several years. The fact that some of the titles listed were defunct did not bother me because defunct titles frequently show up on up to date lists. What got me going was that there was a host of zine titles that did not have current web sites. However I did discover another useful site for flash fiction.. Its FLASH FICTION AND SHORT SHORT FICTION (www.terryburns.net/shortmarkets ) It is a long list of other web sitess that list markets. Some are lists are current and some are defunct.

TWO USEFUL SITES FOR FLASH FICTION WRITERSI
I have come across two very useful web sites for flash fiction writers. AUDIO MARKET LIST (http:audiomarketlist.com) covers what the title claims. Not strictly a flash fiction list but most audio markets are looking for flash fiction. The other site is THE MARKET LIST (http://www.marketlist.com/ ) which is genre strong and seems to be a competitor with Ralan.
BOOK REVIEW OF BOMBER COUNTRY
BOMBER COUNTRY by Daniel Swift (NYC;2010, Farrar,Straus and Giroux) hb,ISBN 978-0-374--27331-8, $26.00.
BOMBER COUNTRY is many things but for poets and readers of poetry it is this. It is about poetry written during war time by soldiers. In this instance it is about the pilots and other crew members of RAF's Bomber Command who served in the bombing campaign against Germany. The focus of the book is about the author's grandfather who served as a pilot with the RAF. It shows how poetry is used by poets to cope with the destruction of war and especially the destruction they cause in their own military service.
I( highly recommend this book

Well its the begining of the month and time for my monthly admonition; COME FOR THE INFO AND STAY FOR THE SHOPPING. when you shop for books come through the Basrnes & Noble, Amazon ( which apparently sells everything else including really exotic meats )and Powell's Used Books portals at my blog and shop., As they say support your local poetry marketing blogger.
THE POET OF THE FINANCIAL COMMUNITY
http://www.wallstreetpoet.com/ is the site for Michael Silverstein, a satirical poet whose particular targetr is the financial community. I generally do nmot like political satire in poetry because I find it ham handed aqnd dull. Silverstein's work is subtle. It is hard for me to articulate why his poetry works but it does. A good place to visit in order to see succesful examples of a difficult content for poetry.

OPEN TO POETRY BUT ONLY IF YOU ARE CANADIAN
TESSERACTS 15 anthology project (http://www.rdgewebsite.com/) ) is open to YA speculative fiction poetry of all kind but you have to be a Canadian or a landed immigrant in Canada. It can be either in English or French. . If they are concerned about Canadian element in work, you would think that it would also be open to work in First Nations (Amerind or Inuit) language that is recognised in Canada.

BOOK REVIEW
RETRO SPEC ed. by Karen A. Romanko (2010, Los Angeles; Raven Electric Ink) ISBN 978-0-9819643-1-7 ,$14.95
RETRO SPEC is an anthology of prose and poetry that comments on American social, cultural and political history from the 20's trough the 40's. This is the third Spec collection that Romanko has edited and published. The previous two were about sports and sf/f/h cinema. I am only going to comment on the poems.
They are wonderful. The poetry represent broad range ,from humor to sorrow, from politics to passing fads and everything between.
My two favorites couldn't be more different from each other. 'Invasion, 1955' by Robert Borski is a view of the hula hoop fad as if it was a 1950's Flying Saucer invasion film.
'From seemingly out of nowhere they came,
not saucers but their smaller ringworld brethern
until almost everywhere you look
across the land,people are gyrating
in ectasy caught up in invasion...'
The other is' Rain Goddess ; The Dust Bowl, 1930's' by K. M. Preschak is an unnamed rain goddess hearing the cries of American farmers suffering during the Dust Bowl. Woody Guthrie could have written this.
... Inside the prison of their barns, farmers weep.
In my enforced sleep I heard curses from Texas
to Saskatchewan as the land began to fail
...crops
yielded only pain...
Thisis a terrific collection that is well worth the price.

HARD TO READ MARKET RESOURCE
I just came from a website devoted to podcast markets, http://www.podcastshuffle.com/ .Useful but my god dark blue lettering on black background; almost as bad as red or purple lettering on black background. Folks websites have to be legible in order to be fully useful.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A NIGHT MAKES
I did research for the previous post on flash fiction web sites last night. I went back to them for some additional research and two of them have already been takeb down and the Terry Jones site no longer has data on flash fiction markets. Data becomes obsolete on the internet real quick but this happened, you pardon the expression, in a flash. Does anyone out there know of an uptodate user friendly website for flash fiction markets other than ralan and duotrope.
LOOKING FOR MARKETS THAT ARE NOT FLASHES IN THE PAN
I went looking for websites that would be useful for digging up flash fiction markets and I got floods of flash fiction market sites. Other than going to the obvious ones like Ask.com, resourceswriterssuite101.com,info.comand absolutewriters.com here are some that have some precision; http://www.flashfiction.com/ , http://www.gregschwarts.blogspot.com/, and http://www.terryburns.net/. I especially liked the last one.

A NEW MARKET
I do not consider literary annuals to be periodicals but magazine styled anthologies . That said the literary annual LABLETTER http://www.labletter.com/ is a paying market
IT CAN BE CONFUSING
Ovvassionally a report bubbles up through the internet that THE STRAND has been folded. Dont believe it. The magazine's publisher keeps a very irregular schedule and is slow in responding. So keep a skeptical eye on all these announcements unless it comes directly from the magazine itself. BTW is there anyone familiar with the Indiebound web site ?

A CANADIAN MARKET THAT EMBRACES NON-CANADIANS
PRISM (http://prism.ca.ubc.ca/ ) is a well paying Canadian market that accepts work from non-Canadians. Another well paying market is POETRY MAGAZINE (http://poetryfoundation.org/ ) is another at $10 per line.
A MARKET SLITHERS OUT TO POETS
Though their guidelines dont mention it the new df/h audio magazine PSEUDOPOD (http://pseudopod.org/ is a market for poetry but editor Ben Phillips pointed out that the poems have to be straight forward . So if you send a poem to them it better not be wiggly. The new general fiction magazine VARSITY PRINTS is not open to poetry.

FURTHER COMMENTS ON ROYALTIES
An academic poet contacted me away from the blog and told me that in her experience, poetry collections published by academic presses had no problem paying herroyalties. For anyone who is reading this who has a similair experience please post the reasons why academic presses do well in this category. I have my theory but I want to hear from others begore I comment on it. However I am still disinclined to report on anthology markets that are royalties only in payment.

YOUR CAT & OTHER SPACE ALIENS by Mary Turzillo, Berlin CT and Cleveland OH; 2007. vanZeno Press Professional Reading Series, $19.95, ISBN 978-0-9789244-0-9, pb
THE DRAGON DICTIONARY by Meg Simon and Mary Turzillo, Cedar Rapids, IA; 2010,Sam's Dot, $6.00, ISBN 978-1-935590-14-9, pb
DRAGON SOUP by Marge Simon & Mary Turzillo, Cleveland OH and Berlin CT, 2008, vanZeno Press Professional Reading Series,$19,95, ISBN 978-0-9789244-5-4, pb
First let me make this clear. All three of these collections are well worth the price and well worth ordering, which you can do through Amazon the last I knew. These collections are excellent showcases for something thats gets overlooked too often in poetry, humor.
The first collection is a whimisical which I know is an over used term but in this case well deserved. The poems are about observations on the behavior of critters that are not human. As you can tell from the title, cats and their moods are the focus of many of these poems. It is not all humorous poetry. For example there is a fine poem about Wayne Gacy titled 'Gacy' that is neither cute or cuddly.
'In Jack's dream
we live with John Wayne Gacy.
Something is wrong, Jack says, but I don't seem to care..."
However this first stanza from the poem 'Oath of the Moon' is more typical of the collection
"Whiskers smelling of milk and tuna,
he slink's into his mistress's bedroom
intent on rubbing against her legs
and, since he is tonight her same species,
further up. Beware werecat's mistress,
the front claws, the barbed penis. ''"
THE DRAGON DICTIONARY is what it says it is. Its basically a light hearted twist on Ambrose Bierce's THE DEVIL'S DICTIONARY. Only its aimed at D & D'ers and fans of light fantasy novels that have dragons on their covers. Most of these definitions rvolve dragons and all their quibbles and dragony ways. The definitions are interspered with poetry and the artful ilustrations created by Marge Simon.. It can be a little too cutesy for some but I enjoyed it and I usually have a low tolerance for cutesy. However Simon'sketch of a lady dragon singing 'the hills are alive.." won me over. Your daughter/female relative/female offspring of friends are going to love it. Maybe it get their minds off of undernourished boy vampires.
DRAGON SOUP is not a collaboration but rather a collection of poems and flash fiction by Simon and a collection of poems and flash fiction. Almost all the pieces are humorous work about dragons and illustrated by Simon. As I said before I have a low toleration of whimsey but I enjoyed the poems and flash fiction. You dont have to be a dedicated dracophile to enjoy this collection. Like the previous collection it would make a great gift to wean young females from their fascination with wain male vampires and young lads with buxum vampirettes. It is well worth buying it for tour self.
Do yourselff a favor for the gift buying season buy all three from Amazon and lo and behold this site has a portal to Amazon (hint).

STILL ANOTHER WELCOME
First a welcome to my 15th follower. Secondly I now have a tweeter account but I still have to figure out how to access it. Lastly before the day is finished I am going to do three book reviews; two are joint collections by Mary Turzillo and Marge Simon and the thirsd is a collection by Turzillo only which brings up a beef.
Mary is one of the most important poets working within the sf/f/h genres and she doesnt get much buzz. I think the reason is an odd one at first. She has many appearences in the major newsstand and commercial markets like ANALOG, ASIMOV'S and WEIRD TALES but that is also her problem. Relatively few sf/f/h poetry fans read the major genre magazines. Just check out how few poems that appear in ASIMOV'S gets nominated for the Rhyslings. The other matter is that much of her work is humorous and humorous poems dont get the respect they deserve though she does get her fair share of Rhysling nominations.
There I feel better getting it off my chest.

YOUR OPINIONS PLEASE
I want your opinions.
First do you find that the smallest poetry markets seem to have the most elaborate procedures for submitting material.
The second is what you folks think of flash fiction. Is it really poetry and should I start covering flash fiction markets ?

THE LONG AND WINDING SUBMISSION PROCESS
According to a very good source WEIRD TALES should not be open to poetry until Jan., 2011. So start holding your breth now.
THE CORRECT DECISION
Recently the sf/f/h poet as bwell as outstanding children/ya writer was elected the newest Grand Master by the members of the Science Fiction Poetry Association over df/h/Lovecraftian poet Richard Tierney. Both poets were major poets in their own particular segments of sf/f/h literature. Yolen was the right decision on purely pragmatic grounds. A much wider audience is familiar with Yolen's work and career than with Tierney's. Simply put you could do more in pr with Yolen than with Tierney.

BOTH PLEASED AND ANNOYED
I read the first two volumes of NESFA Press' nine volume set of Roger Zelazny collected stories called appriopiately enough THE COLLECTED STORIES OF ROGER ZELAZNY. What pleases that the two volumes reprinted a considerable portion of his poetry including many previously unpublished work. This brings to mind my own Zelazny story..He was co-editing a tribute anthology for Jack Williamson. I queried him if the collection was open to poetry. For almost a year I hear nothing and truth be told I had forgotten about it. Then on a Friday night at 10 pm the telephone rings. My mother answers and tells its for me.
I take the telephone and it turns out to be Zelazny. I am speechless. He asks me if I could send one or two poems for the collection. I say sure, we have a pleasant conversation and I promise to send two poems as soon as I can. I write two haikus that night and put them in the mail. A week later I get another call, its him. He says he loved both poems and is $50 enough for them. I think he means $50 for both poems. Then I realise he means $50 a poem. Hey thats the best rate I ever been paid for poetry. I said yes and thats the end of my story.

I CANT STAND THE POETRY BUT LOVE THE ANALYSIS
MY VOCABULARY DID THIS TO ME THE COLLECTED POETRY OF JACK SPICER ed. by Peter Gizzi and Kevin Killian Middletown,CT; 2009,Wesleyan University 2008, hb,no price listed, ISBN 978-0-8195-6887-8 .
Even though this book is almost two years ago I am sure it is still readily available. Now I am no fan of the work of Jack Spicer. To me his work with its pain , self pitying and self absorbness seems all that is terribly wrong with modern mainstream poetry. Yet I found this book a worthy read. The editors do an excellent examination on how the poet's sad life created the poetry he wrote. I never read a better examination of the creative process in poetry. I wouldn't buy the book but I certainly go to the library to read it.

A REALLY BIG MARKET AND A WELCOME
The HERITAGE TALES anthology project is open to poetry but it has to be very long work of 60 pages or more such as ballads. For more details go to the publisher's web site http://www.pixiupress.com/ .Also a hello to the 12th person who now follows this blog. BTW if any of you has made a sale or has a publication out dont hesitate to post it here. For example the latest issue of ABANDONED TOWERS is going to have a poem by me, a Lovecraftian piece called 'The Pirates of Innsmouth' though it probably owes more to John Gay or Kurt Weil.

BOOK REVIEW OF WILD HUNT OF THE STARS
WILD HUNT OF THE STARS by Ann K. Schwader, Cedar Rapids IA; 2010, Sam's Dot, pb, $6.00, ISBN 978-0-9816365-0-4
Ann Schwader is one of the pillars of the hard sf poetry community. Many though not all the poems in the collection are about the sher and unbridled romance that is space travel. Not all her poems are cherry and optimistic. A fair number of the poems have a dark and nihilistic edge. Still I think this paragraph from the poem 'What Mars Need' represents both the heart of this collection and her life's work as a poet.
'What Mars needs are pyramids
rising from red plains
drifted with history,asteroid dust,
& a few cryptic fragments
of hope'
This is a must buy poetry collection.

BOOK REVIEW
POETRY IN PERSON ed. by Alexander Neubauer (New York; 2010, Alfred A. Knopf, hb $27.95, ISBN 978-0-307-26967-6 .
The book is a series of interviews of major American poets at the New School in Greenwhich Village over the past 30 year. They were interviewed by an English professor on why and how they wrote their poetry. In other words poets talk about their creative process when it comes to writing poetry. It is sort of a printed 'Actor's Studio' for poets.
This is a must have book for any serious poet's library.

A REVIEW DARKLY
DARK MATTERS by Bruce Boston, (Anaheim; 2010, Bad Moon) pb $17.95, ISBN-10, 0-9844601-5-2, ISBN-13, 978-0-9844601-5-1
This is the latest of the many fine speculative poetry collections written by Bruce Boston. Most of the poems in this collection are a new look on the paths through literature created by writers who are influences on Boston; Bradbury.Cocteau,Wallace Stevenson, E.R.R. Edison and the list goes on. There may be a few poems that do not harken back to the work of another writer but frankly I did not see any that fall in this category.
The title of the collection refers to the theory that 99 % of all matter in the universe is dark matter . Well the poems in this collection are the bright and visible stars in the creative universe of Bruce Boston.
This is a must have collection but all Boston collections fall in that category.

A TINY BIT OF MARKET NEWS
http://www.sciencefictionfantasyhorror.com/, the web sitethat buys poetry at is temporarilly closed.
WHAT I MEAN FROM SF/F/H
Whenever I use the term sf/f/h it means science fiction/fantasy/horror and related genres. Now I can spend paragraphs and paragraphs describing each of the three categories but instead I am going to use Green's Law. Green's Law states the following, 1. Whatever the editor of a science fiction periodical, anthology or other publication buys is a science fiction poem. Ditto for fantasy poem, ditto for horror poem. The definitions may be overly simplistic but it seems to work. What are your thoughts?

BOOK REVIEW
THE LIVING FIRE by Edward Hirsch (New York; 2010, Alfred A. Knopf) ISBN 978-0-375-41522-7 , hb, $27.00.
Edward Hirsch is amainstream literary poet who I find worth reading. He writes about his own response to cultural and literary and emotional themes but you find out more what he is writing about rather than knowing more than you want about the poet.
I was caught with the first poem in the collection and could not put the book down.
'The Begining of Poetry'
Railroad tracks split the campus in half
and at night you'd lie on your narrow cot
and listen to the lonely whistle
of a train crossing the prarie at night.
A collection worth buying.

THE IMPACT OF MY COMMENTS
My facetious remark about COYOTE WILD seems to have provoked people in a positive way. I want to post a poetry challenge to the readers of this blog. The late great Gabby Hayes was a stage actor before becoming Hollywood's arch Western sidekick. I already did this on a listserve a month or so ago but I am going to do it here. I would like to read a poem about doing important Shakespear monologues. Go wild. Just think of three Gabby Hayes in drag doing the witch scene from Macbeth.
Monday, June 7, 2010
ON SECOND THOUGHT
I think COYOTE WILD is actually dead but wont admit it. Those Acme market conditions can be a killer.
